AI fluency is not the ability to produce an impressive first answer. It is the ability to direct, evaluate, and take responsibility for work produced with AI. Anthropic’s framework names four connected competencies:
01DelegationDecide the goal, the work split, and whether Claude belongs in the task.
02DescriptionDefine the product, process, and performance you need.
03DiscernmentJudge the product, process, and performance you receive.
04DiligenceOwn the choices, disclosure, and consequences.

Put one piece of work through the loop

You need to prepare a board update about a delayed rollout. Claude can help with synthesis and drafting. You still own the judgment, evidence, and release.

The loop inside the framework

Delegation opens the work. Description and Discernment repeat until the result meets your standard. Diligence governs the work from creation through release.

Description turns intent into instructions. Discernment tests the result. What you learn goes back into the next description until the work meets your standard.

Bring your own task

Choose one task you expect to do this week. Answer these four questions out loud:
  1. What should remain yours, and what should Claude handle?
  2. What product, process, and performance do you need to describe?
  3. What evidence and standards will you use to judge the result?
  4. What must you verify, disclose, and own before the work leaves your hands?
